A light-day is the distance light travels in 24 hours, about 26 billion km (16 billion miles). According to Tom's Hardware, Voyager 1 will reach it after 49 years, 2 months and 13 days of flight, although it was designed for a five-year mission to Jupiter and Saturn.
The distance makes repairs difficult: in 2024 the spacecraft suffered a critical memory error that was fixed after weeks of diagnosis, and earlier this year NASA had to shut down instruments in an emergency after an unexpected drop in power. Signals from the spacecraft already take more than 22 hours to reach Earth.
Estimates suggest that its three radioisotope thermoelectric generators (RTGs) will keep Voyager 1 operating into the 2030s, barring a major failure.
