OpenAI plans to merge the Chat and Work tabs inside ChatGPT, according to an email sent to users and reported by TechCrunch. The merged experience will first open to select users for feedback before a wide rollout. The desktop app currently has separate ChatGPT and Codex sections, with two more tabs inside ChatGPT.
According to the email, users will be able to go from exploring an idea to having it carried out in one place: bring in files and plugins and ask ChatGPT to build a website, create a presentation or act on the web, while reviewing and guiding the work. Codex will remain a separate experience in the app.
With the change, ChatGPT and Codex will draw tokens from the same allowance. OpenAI said most users will not be affected, but depending on usage and model, some may need to wait for resets more often. Anthropic merged Claude's chat and Cowork into a single screen in September.
