China review: Cambricon co-founder calls for shared ethics rules for Chinese and US AI models

A Cambricon co-founder urges uniform ethical requirements for leading Chinese and US models, a Chinese clinical trial of focused ultrasound restores function to a patient after a coma, and CATL looks for growth in battery swapping and energy storage.

Geopolitics: Chen Yunji, co-founder of Chinese AI chipmaker Cambricon, called on Friday at an event in Shanghai for universal ethical requirements for leading Chinese and American AI models to reduce risks to society. According to the South China Morning Post, the remarks come after a string of high-profile cyberattacks that threatened critical infrastructure and breached government servers.

Science: A patient in China who spent three months in a coma after a brain haemorrhage has regained the ability to speak, eat and walk with support, as part of an early clinical trial that uses targeted sound waves to help "wake up" severely damaged brains. According to SCMP, citing state media, the technology was developed by a coalition that includes the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Shenzhen Institutes of Advanced Technology, and it stimulates deep brain regions with focused ultrasound.

Technology: CATL, the world's largest battery maker, is expanding into new businesses such as battery swapping and energy storage as price wars weigh on profitability. According to SCMP, the path is not simple: Nio already has a strong presence in battery swapping, and BYD has strengthened its position in energy storage systems.
