DeepSeek plans to use Huawei's Ascend chips to train its next-generation model, V5, Chinese newspaper STAR Market Daily reported on November 3, citing several industry sources. TechNode, which cited the report, noted that the move would extend the chips' role from running existing models to training, which needs far more compute.

According to the report, Ascend chips have so far mainly been used for inference of DeepSeek models. Training V5 on them would be a further step in the company's shift toward Chinese AI hardware, following earlier work to adapt its software infrastructure to domestic processors. DeepSeek and Huawei have not confirmed the report, and it is not known when V5 is due.
