Apple told developers about a change to App Store rules meant to make it harder for minors to use dating apps or AI companions that engage in "sexual or romantic content." Under the new policy, any app offering dating or romantic relationship features must carry an 18+ rating. Starting November 16, developers will be required to include new content descriptors so the app's age rating reflects its features.
According to TechCrunch, the change may mostly affect AI companion apps, such as Character.AI and Replika, or apps where such functionality is one of many features. These apps are often aimed at younger people. As of last summer, the top AI companion apps on the App Store and Google Play had been downloaded 220 million times worldwide.
Apps will also have to state whether they share the user's real-world location with another person or group. In Brazil, family location-sharing apps can request an official rating from the local Ministry of Justice. The change follows earlier Apple steps to protect minors, including a global rollout of age assurance technology and more parental controls.
