OpenAI is preparing a PR campaign for the period after Tuesday's US midterm elections, Axios reported, according to TechCrunch. Chris Lehane, the company's chief global affairs officer, told Axios that the midterms will be "a bit of a movie trailer" for 2028, when he expects AI to be "the issue" in the presidential election.

Lehane described several proposals through which the company intends to shape the debate: developing AI "speed limits", finding ways to help people see AI as empowering them in daily life, pushing the US to take a role in developing global standards, and rebranding data centers as "AI compute campuses".

The public debate over data centers has already pushed Amazon and Microsoft to say they will no longer use NDAs in negotiations with local governments. Lehane called the conversation "good and healthy" and said "communities should hold companies responsible and accountable" so they get a real benefit from the projects. Details and timing of the plan have not been published.
