According to Waymo's announcement, the vehicles will be built at Toyota's Takaoka plant in Toyota City, Aichi Prefecture, and the whole process, from assembling the base vehicle to integrating the self-driving hardware, will happen under one roof. The robotaxi version has more rear legroom, automatic doors and a power liftgate. It is the first product of the preliminary agreement the two signed in April 2025.

According to Electrek, 2027 is a testing phase. Waymo did not share sensor specs, unit volumes or cost. In September Waymo said it is targeting fully driverless commercial rides in Tokyo in 2027 with taxi operator Nihon Kotsu and the GO ride-hailing app, with about 100 vehicles, pending regulatory approval.

The bZ4X will be the fourth model in Waymo's fleet, alongside the discontinued Jaguar I-Pace, the Zeekr-built van and the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The companies will also keep exploring autonomous driving in Toyota's personally owned vehicles, but with no timeline.
